Young People Takeover Déda

Tue 14th June, 2011 @ 3:50pm by deda

Young people from two of the city’s secondary schools are joining forces to takeover Déda for an evening.

Students from Littleover Community School and Lees Brook Community Sports College have been working with staff from Déda to programme an evening of entertainment at Déda on Thursday 30 June from 5-7pm. Year 9 students from Littleover Community School will be providing a programme of music, drama and visual art presentations in the CUBE café|bar. Meanwhile, the Lees Brook students will be performing short dance demos and teaching mini dance phrases to members of the general public. This will be accompanied by the showing of three films profiling

Déda’s participation and festivals work with the people of Derby as part of an event to celebrate Derby City Partnership’s Be Inspiring week. The theme of the takeover is ‘city-life’, tying in perfectly with the ideals of the ‘Be Inspiring’ project.

The students have been working closely with Déda staff for several months to prepare for the mini-takeover and to complete their Arts Award in a Creative Exchanges Project funded by The Mighty Creatives. It is hoped that the initiative will encourage young people aged between 11-16 to actively engage with cultural organisations like Déda and to learn more about the creative sector and the employment opportunities it can provide.

The young people have been to see performances at Déda, have taken part in ‘speed meets’ with Déda staff and associated artists and have had the opportunity to meet national dancers and choreographers. It is hoped that the young people involved in the project will eventually take part in a new youth forum which Déda hopes to establish as the next phase of the project.

The Mini-Takeover takes place at Déda on Thursday 30 June from 5-7pm. Entry is free, but please book your place by calling the Box Office on 01332 370911.
