PREVIEW: The Husbands at Curve Theatre

A challenging piece of theatre showcasing an imaginative world of love, jealousy and passion - The Husbands brought by award winning Kali Theatre and Pentabus Theatre comes to Curve Theatre from 25 February – 1 March 2014.

The play, written by Sharmila Chauhan, who has been shortlisted for the Asian New Writer award and chosen for the Royal Court's Critical Mass programme, tackles some of the current issues of female infanticide that has become widespread in rural India. In her work Chauhan, she invents the world in which only boys are seen as valuable assets and baby girls are aborted or killed soon after birth. As a result a lot of village communities suffer from a lack of young women. That is why it is becoming more and more common for two or even more men to share one wife.

The play is directed by Janet Steel, Artistic Director of Kali and Elizabeth Freestone, Artistic Director of Pentabus and is a moving tale of emotions, envy and power presented with vivid, poetic language that brings this extraordinary but believable new world to life.

This inspiring plot is performed by award winning artists. Kali presents ground-breaking theatre writing by South Asian women. They have won rave reviews, sell-out performances and inspired audiences all over the UK with work that reflects and comments on our lives today. Pentabus Theatre is a contemporary theatre company, producing original plays about the rural world for local and national audiences. Based on a farm in Shropshire, Pentabus makes a real commitment to the creative health of the countryside, encouraging artists to draw from it and urging communities to participate in it.

The Husbands will be performed at the Curve Theatre, Leicester from 25 February to 1 March 2014.
