“To die upon a kiss” – Othello at Curve Theatre

"Fusing a taut adaptation of the classic text with its trademark hard-hitting choreography, Frantic Assembly takes a scalpel to 21st century Britain, exposing prejudice, danger and fear."

In a commotion of paranoia, jealousy, lust and murder, Othello – Shakespeare’s tragic play set originally in Venice – makes its way to Curve Theatre from 28 October to 1 November for a modern take on a classic text.

Set in Yorkshire behind the backdrop of 2001’s race riots, division and unexpected alliances front a tale of contrition and societal woe. Frantic Assembly, the theatre company behind the production, dissect 21st century Britain, exposing prejudice, danger and fear.

With violence as life and reputation as commodity, Othello’s passionate but secret affair with Desdemona incites jealousy and hatred. Socially and racially out of place in this adaptation’s modern setting, Othello’s face is public, his business well known. Open to attack, unable to keep secrets, Othello finds himself tangled in lies, twisted in emotion and vulnerable in a new land.

Former kick-boxer and RSC actor Mark Ebulue takes the lead, supported by Kirsty Oswald as Desdemona. TV’s Steven Miller (Casualty, BBC) plays Iago, with Ryan Fletcher playing as Cassio – unwittingly caught between love and jealously. Leila Crerar and Richard James-Neale play Emilia and Roderigo respectively, alongside Dritan Kastrati – a recent graduate of Frantic Assembly’s Ignition programme – who takes on the role of Montano.

Co-produced with Theatre Royal Plymouth, Scott Graham directs this lustful, spontaneous and emotional take on one of Shakespeare’s most well-known tragedies. Combining this with choreographic energy and skilful acting, Frantic Assembly’s Othello is a must-watch this October.
