QUAD Presents its Autumn season of Writers Workshops and Courses

This September and October sees QUAD’s new Autumn programme of creative writing activities, with sessions covering both the art and craft of writing as well as the work of literary agents and the author’s social media.

The programme begins with Social Media for Writers hosted by Penny Reeve, Publicity Manager for Nottingham’s award-winning Angry Robot Books. This two-hour workshop is for authors looking to get onto social media for the first time or those looking to build their existing profile online. Social Media for Writers takes place in QUAD on Thursday 14th September from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, fees are £8:00.

From Idea to Publication is a popular course is a great introduction to the world of writing for new authors just starting out or looking to get their stories on paper for the first time. The course is designed to be an informative and inspiring experience covering a wide range of creative areas such as plot, characterisation, description and editing as well as taking a look at publishing at all levels. From Idea to Publication course takes place on Mondays, from 18th September to 6th November, at 6:30pm to 9:00pm, course fees are £120.00 or £110.00 concessions.

The 23rd September sees two events taking place for authors, with QUAD’s Literature Officer Alex Davis bringing his Literature Surgeries to the venue for the first time. These half hour sessions include feedback on 10,000 words of writing, as well as detailed and tailored advice on where you might get your work published and how to take your writing career forward. There are limited slots so prompt booking is advised. The first Literature Surgery takes place on Saturday 23rd September from 10:00am to 1:00pm, fees are £20.00 including the feedback meeting.

On the same day, QUAD will also be welcoming literary agent Jamie Cowen of the Ampersand Agency for a detailed interview session. The Work of a Literary Agent provides an invaluable insight into a crucial part of the publishing world including exploring what an agent does with their time, what they are looking for in a submission and how they sell your work to publishers. The Work of a Literary Agent takes place on Saturday 23rd September from 2:00pm - 4:00pm, fees are £6.

October offers a choice of two workshops, firstly Eve Makis returns for a re-run of the sell-out Writing for Life session. Use life experiences as the basis for fiction or memoir writing through a series of short, structured, fun exercises, suitable for beginners and experienced writers. Taught by a novelist who always comes equipped with cake! Writing for Life takes place on Thursday 12th October, from 7:00pm - 9:00pm fees are £8.

Programmed in time for Hallowe’en, Writing Horror Stories is workshop with QUAD’s Literature Officer and horror author Alex Davis. Horror remains a popular genre of fiction, and the one-day workshop will explore key areas such as building tension and atmosphere, building to a perfect final reveal, characterisation in horror, giving you all the tools to build a story that will stay with your reader long after they have put it down. Writing Horror Stories workshop takes place on Saturday 28th October, from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Course fees are: £30, £25 concessions.

QUAD will also delve into the world of novelist John Le Carré at a special event in September. An Evening With George Smiley will be broadcast live from London’s Royal Festival Hall in a celebration of one of the world’s greatest writers as he shares the secrets behind the creation of his most beloved character. The writing of John Le Carré has come to define the last half century, from his extraordinary Cold War novels such as The Spy Who Came In From The Cold and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy to his powerful descriptions of the War On Terror in The Night Manager, A Most Wanted Man and A Delicate Truth.

The one-off event, and a rare public appearance John Le Carré will read from his new novel, A Legacy Of Spies, which sees the return of his most iconic Cold War characters, as their past comes back to claim them in the present. With a unique question and answer session, this is an unmissable opportunity to experience one of the foremost chroniclers of our age, direct and in his own words. Le Carré will discuss the full breadth of his career spanning five decades, and reflect on the continuing story of his most famous creation, the tubby, bespectacled spy, George Smiley.

John Le Carré: An Evening With George Smiley takes place in QUAD on Thursday 7th September at 7:45pm. Tickets are £13 or £11.50 concessions.
