A Dior t-shirt we’d actually wear – Dior for nerds by Studio ROKIT

Brands, especially when you are dealing with fashion can be extremely cliquey and the higher up the fashion tree you go the more exclusive the brands become and the people who they want to wear them more selective. So we thought it was high time nerds got a high fashion brand all of their own, laddies and gentlemen we give you a Dior t-shirt we’d actually wear – Dior for nerds by Studio ROKIT.

Of course, it’s a bit of fun but one thing that is common with most (if not every high end fashion..

Leicester City of Culture 2017 – Leicester through to the next round

Leicester City of Culture 2017 is looking like it could become a reality with Leicester through to the next round and we’re up against some stiff competition.

The cut killed off City of Culture 2017 bids from Chester, East Kent, Hastings and Bexhill on Sea, Plymouth, Portsmouth and Southampton, and Southend-on-Sea leaving Leicester’s City of Culture 2017 bid up against Dundee, Hull (our favourite and one that the Guardian take particular interest in here) and Swansea Bay.

Simplified branding – how effective food packaging design uses shape and colour

As consumers we’re bombarded with marketing messages on a daily basis. It’s a war out there, companies are in an endless arms race to try and create branding that both sticks in the mind and also drives emotional responses. In a look at how effective food packaging design uses shape and colour and are essential basic elements in effective branding. Simplified branding, to the point where only shape and colour remain is surprisingly effective, direct and above all, memorable. The most basic building..

Brands as nationalist parties – company logos re-imagined by Studio ROKIT / SET TWO

Hot on the heals of the Brands as nationalist parties – company logos re-imagined by Studio ROKIT / SET ONE, comes the next load of companies that we take a quick look at through the prism of a nationalist flag (FOR FUN people – keep that in mind). And in this set there’s a few classic logos that, in their day were BIG but nothing compared to todays super brands. Still, it’s fun to recontextualize them and take a fresh look at brands and identity designs that are ubiquitous .

Enjoy and ke..

Brands as nationalist parties – company logos re-imagined by Studio ROKIT

Companies are bigger now than at any other single point in the history of mankind. Business has changed and become something that only sci-fi writers ever really touched on (some of the best visions of future business can be found in one of Britain’s finest comics – 2000AD – ahead of it’s time and home over the years to some truly amazing talent). Some of them generate more wealth and have more people working for them than entire countries.

It’s a question that many bright people have p..

Sam’s Beer Festival Leicester – Studio ROKIT sponsored a winner

Sam’s Beer Festival Leicester 2013, in aid of the Leicester Samaritans was a roaring success and Studio ROKIT sponsored a winner with our sponsorship keg being the new beer from Scarborough Brewery ‘Phrenology’ and at 6.2% abv it definitely had you holding on to your head, right up until the point where it worked it charms so successfully that either your fingers or your head end up numb (in a truly nice way).

Studio ROKIT gets its name on the best beer at the festival.

10 minute graphic design project – Treasure Island book cover

If there’s one lesson any aspiring designer should learn and one that real designers know the value of it’s to be able to work quickly and be able to identify good ideas quickly. The 10 minute graphic design project – Treasure Island book cover is a little exercise in just that.

Like most talents or skills, design requires practice, exercise and fresh challenges. Most of these we find in our daily work, but it’s nice to do work that just keeps you on your toes or just scratches a tiny ide..

What’s the first logo or brand you remember seeing?

What’s the first logo or brand you remember seeing? It seems a simple question to ask anyone, but as the years roll on and advertising and branding becomes more sophisticated and employs new technologies and platforms to help it penetrate your ears, eyes, and nasal passages*, it becomes a harder question to answer.

*(yes, that’s right, what do you think perfume is? It’s merely an olfactory brand extender, a logo you can smell – sorry to break the illusion and destroy the fantasy, and this..

It’s time for a new NRA logo – run the StudioROKIT redesign…

It seems like there’s never a week that passes that some terrible gun related tragedy isn’t propelled into the global news streams. As of writing this post, the US has already endured 1,280 gun related deaths since the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings on December 14, 2012. That’s only 5 months ago with a daily casualty toll of over 8 people per day. Quite a sobering fact.

And this got us thinking, perhaps it’s time for a new National Rifle Association (NRA) logo, one that more accurately d..

The Leicester City of Culture 2017 bid now needs to be as good as it possibly can be with competition hotting up and the approved shortlist being anything but short; it’s now an 11 horse race with all bidders gaining approval.

All of the cities (and areas – even though it is ‘City of Culture 2017′ there’s entire areas bidding for the gong) which registered their interest had until 30 April 2013 to submitt a bid to an independent advisory panel, chaired by Phil Redmond and it looks like ..

Leicester City of Culture 2017 – the bidders Part 3

And so onto the final overview for the bidders up against Leicester in the UK City of Culture 2017 competition – the bidders Part 3. The last 2 on the list, they’re no less interesting or controversial than any of the others. Say hello to Southend-on-Sea and Swansea Bay (covering Swansea, Carmarthenshire, Neath and Port Talbot). Two very different bidders offering 2 very different visions of UK culture. So let’s ‘sea’ what they’re all about.

In the first part of our quick overview of Leicester’s competitors to the UK City of Culture 2017 competition we looked at the first 5, now it’s time to take a flying overview of the next three. It’s time to see what Hull, Plymouth, Portsmouth and Southampton might have up their collective cultural sleeves. Have they got the tricks to dazzle the judges and pull in the punters or are they, like we predict with Hastings bid changes, just a little out of their depth.

UK City of Culture 2017 – the bidders Part 1

The clock is ticking down and as the deadline looms for all contenders to submit their bids it’s time to take a quick look at Leicester’s competition for the UK City of Culture 2017 crown. The long-list has some great cities vying for the gong and if there’s one thing we can all be sure of, the competition will bring out the very best the bidders has to offer and in the process, help each of them rediscover who they are and what their culture actually is. Copycat packaging design – misleading or just really clever?

Copycat packaging misleading or just really clever? It's a big question - perhaps we need a quick history lesson. Pablo Picasso once said "Good artists borrow, great artists steal", and there's little doubt that Pablo, a wily chap at the best of times, know what he was on about, having (probably) lifted it from T.S.Elliot and swapping around a few words to fit his vision. Of course, the story doesn't stop there however, every generation brings new understanding to the basic truth of the message and Ban..

HTC crowd source advertising work for HTC ONE

Please note. This is NOT April 1st. Feels like it though.

Things at one of the world’s leading mobile technology companies HTC, must be bad, really really bad. We all know that margins in electronics have never been narrower and that the globalisation of mobile technology and the market’s ability to change overnight has seen once mighty brands wither and die and new names become dominant just as quickly. It’s like the whole industry is in a constant state of flux. Exciting times for sure, y..

Packaging is like crack for designers. We love it. We obsess over the minutest of its details, talk about it in the same way other people wax lyrically about an album, a film, a nice bottle of wine (nice label, lovely embossing) and we all have our favourites.

Why designers are so obsessed with packaging is a big question and probably has a lot of parts to the answer. But, I’m willing to bet that part of the reason is that packaging is kind of like a book or a pantomime, a performance piece. It..

Say Yes To Homes – infographics

It’s been a crazy couple of weeks here in the Studio ROKIT mothership – lots of clients wanting lots of things and lots of new clients wanting lots of new things too. A whirlwind of creativeness. Thank goodness it’s finally Friday! A Cut Above Meat Co. – quality branding, amazing meat.

As we mentioned in an earlier post, we love branding and when we were approached by a friend of the company to help their family farm out with a new brand for their posh meat, we jumped at the chance.

Since then wheels were set in motion, lots of designs have come and gone, revisions and amends have been made and made again but we have finally nailed down the new logo for an amazing range of meat from South Farm in Durham.

Leicester. Most people, especially from abroad, can’t even pronounce it (get an American or Australian to pronounce it and you will have your %RDA of daily laughs covered) – and even in our own country it’s one of those easily overlooked cities that has always been there, sitting in the shadows of its bigger and louder neighbours. But perhaps Leicester’s star is on the rise. Leicester is entering the bidding race/process/contest/war to become the UK’s City of Culture for 2017.

So, the b..

Imagine… 55 years of the best children’s toy, ever.

Imagination. It’s the crazy, immeasurable, nebulous spark that can make any kid see a castle in a cardboard box, a racing car in an old skateboard and some pram wheels and a repository for monsters in any dark corner or slightly open door in a dark bedroom. Imagination, if we keep exercising it is the gift that keeps on giving in so many ways it’s hard to fathom and it can be your best friend from early childhood till the sun sets on your life. From fun stuff as a kids to serious stuff as an adult ..

Mmmmmmm A really meaty project!

At StudioROKIT we love working on branding. For most designers, creating new brands from the ground up, breathing life into a dry business plan and essentially putting meat onto the bones of a good business idea is something that gets our juices flowing.

Recently we began working with a close friend of the company, helping them create something special for their family’s farm. They had an idea, a good plan of how the business would work, the right product, the right prices… in fact that had i..

Bezier Group goes POP! Behind the scenes of the highstreet.

It seems like the world is changing quite quickly these days. By changing I mean that what we once thought of as stable, solid businesses are folding like houses of cards on our high-street. Mirroring the inexorable change to the UK high-street with the loss of huge brands like HMV, Blockbuster, Habitat, Oddbins, Virgin Megastores, Borders, Comet, Jessops(maybe a breath of life in the brand – Peter Jones has his work cut out), High & Mighty, Allied Carpets, and this week the fashion retailer REPU..

Rebranding

Whether you’re a big company with global operations and an internationally recognised brand or a smaller company with local or national customers, good branding can play an important part in how your business is seen, perceived and remembered. You get a brand right and it’s like having an extra gear, a tiger in your tank (see what I did there), an advantage. Get it wrong and it’s either something that will be a millstone around your neck or just something that doesn’t add any benefit to the bus..

It was 38 Degrees most successful campaign, it got over 500,000 normal british people to stand up and sign a petition that not only challenged but stopped government policy wanting to sell of the country’s public forests to private contractors looking to make a big mess and a big profit at the public’s expense. Very impressive, in fact so impressive, it was in the news for much longer than anyone in government wanted it to be.

Why wait ’till Easter? Why wait ever?

It’s the age old gripe rolled out by the old or the grumpy. Christmas decorations going up in October (along with the water-level of children’s toy adverts slowly rising), Boxing Day Sale adverts saturating all of the commercial channels on Christmas day and Easter Eggs appearing in every shop and newsagents as if by magic a couple of months before the Easter bunny has even thought about leaving its burrow. Advertising (and ever earlier product stocking) has reached such truly epic levels of satura..
